TURKEY TIME IN TENNESSEE

It's about that time of year again. And no, I'm not talking about UT football. (Go VOLS!)

Looking back, in the South, we always ate turkey for Thanksgiving. You would think that at Christmas, Mother would give the bird a rest. But no, Christmas was a double blessing. That was when Mr. Turkey shared the limelight with Mr. Pig.

But for Thanksgiving, Mr. Turkey always faced the axe alone.

And now, for those who struggle with saying the blessing when asked, the following prayer from Berke might be of help. However, I just feel better tacking on the end, "And Lord, please bless this food to the nourishment of our bodies" when eating something that's been murdered for my benefit.

"Dear Lord, I've been asked, nay commanded, to thank Thee for the turkey before us... a turkey which was no doubt a lively, intelligent bird... a social being... capable of actual affection... nuzzling its young with almost human-like compassion. Anyway, it's dead and we're gonna eat it." — Berke Breathed, Bloom County
